JI joins PTI, PKMAP in anti-government protest movement

ISLAMABAD: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) is poised to team up with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PKMAP) in an anti-government protest movement pending approval from the Majlis-e-Shura.
This decision follows a meeting on Saturday, where a delegation from the opposition, led by PKMAP leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai, engaged in discussions at the JI headquarters.

Notable figures present included PTI’s Asad Qaiser and Hamid Khan Advocate, Balochistan National Party’s (BNP) Sanaullah Baloch, Asad Naqvi, and Punjab Assembly opposition leader Ahmed Khan Bhachar.
Achakzai underscored that the goal of their movement transcends mere regime change; instead, it aims to uphold the constitutional supremacy in Pakistan. He noted a perceptible shift in public sentiment against the ruling coalition and outlined efforts to forge a cohesive opposition front.
Emphasising the importance of constitutional safeguards, Achakzai announced plans for a seminar dedicated to protecting the constitution on May 8, urging JI’s participation.
Following discussions, Achakzai indicated that the details of collaboration would be finalised during the JI Majlis-e-Shura meeting. JI leader Fazlur Rehman confirmed JI’s participation in the upcoming seminar, joined by JI secretary general Amirul Azmi and Vice-Emir Dr Osama Razi.

In a media address alongside opposition leaders, Fazlur Rehman commended the Army Chief’s commitment to constitutional boundaries and urged consistent adherence to these principles. He stressed that constitutional adherence should permeate democracy within political parties, student unions’ revival, and local government empowerment.
