Nawaz Sharif should be willing to face legal proceedings: Bilawal

LAHORE: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto addressed the media in Lahore’s Shadman area, asserting that neither he nor the establishment possesses the authority to determine the date of the upcoming general election.

Bilawal Bhutto expressed reservations on behalf of the PPP concerning the fairness of the upcoming electoral competition. He emphasized the party’s demand for a level playing field from Pakistan Muslim League-N (PMLN), highlighting the need for equitable conditions for all participating parties.

“The issue of a level playing field is conspicuous to all stakeholders,” Bilawal stated. He went on to suggest that all parties within the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) alliance should have been summoned to discuss this crucial matter. Bilawal Bhutto also conveyed his intent to raise concerns if PMLN took any actions that appeared to disrupt the fair electoral environment.

Bilawal said that the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) had assigned PPP co-chairman Asif Zardari the responsibility of addressing objections related to the level playing field, underlining the importance of uniform regulations for all political entities. He underscored the significance of freedom of expression within a democratic framework.

In a veiled criticism of rival political parties, Bilawal Bhutto remarked, “One party excels in propagandistic efforts and character assassination. The primary concern of the public is inflation, not who is coming from where.” He asserted that people were more concerned with addressing the economic challenges and were less interested in political theatrics of prisoner number so and so.

Furthermore, Bilawal Bhutto credited the PPP for providing relief to the impoverished segments of society during a period of global economic inflation. He reiterated the party’s long-standing demand for the return of Nawaz Sharif, emphasizing that PPP itself was willing to face legal proceedings, and therefore, Nawaz Sharif should do the same.
