PESHAWAR: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Faisal Javed has claimed that a strong opposition alliance is taking shape, urging all stakeholders to come forward in support of democracy and constitutional supremacy.
Speaking to the media outside the Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Tuesday, Javed said that “good news” is expected after Eid, as PTI’s senior leadership is in contact with opposition parties. Any party standing for democracy and the rule of law would gain public support, he added.
Criticising the incumbent federal government, he said that ministers were busy with foreign trips while showing little concern for public issues. “These ministers act like foreign envoys rather than representatives of the people,” he said, adding that they had also increased their own salaries despite rising inflation and financial hardships faced by the masses.
Javed further alleged that he was prevented from travelling for Umrah despite securing court permission.
He also recalled Pakistan’s 1992 Cricket World Cup victory under Imran Khan’s leadership, saying that while most players were worried about return tickets, Khan was strategising for the final.
Earlier, the PHC heard cases related to the former senator, with Justices Sahibzada Asadullah and Aurangzeb presiding.
Additional Attorney General Sanaullah informed the court that 17 FIRs had been registered against Javed, and while one had been addressed in a previous court order, he had not sought legal recourse for the others.
The government’s lawyer also stated that Javed had been placed on the passport control list and had not applied for regular bail or participated in investigations, which led to restrictions on his travel.
Justice Asadullah questioned why the court’s March 4 order had not been fully implemented, to which the attorney general replied that it had been acted upon.
Javed’s lawyer, Alam Khan Adinzai, argued that the Ministry of Interior and FIA had failed to comply with the high court’s orders, which led to Javed being offloaded from his flight. He maintained that his client was not involved in anti-state activities but had been booked under terrorism charges.
The court adjourned the hearing on the contempt of court and writ petition cases until Thursday.
Earlier in the day, the Islamabad High Court’s (IHC) Registrar Office set the appeals filed by Imran Khan and his wife against £190 million corruption case for review.
The IHC is scheduled to hear the applications for the suspension filed by former prime minister and former first lady in connection with the high-profile corruption case.
The hearing will be conducted by Acting Chief Justice Sarfaraz Dogar and Justice Muhammad Asif.
