ISLAMABAD: The opposition parties, including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Jamiat Ulema Islam (JUI), Awaam Pakistan and Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP), are pondering forming a grand opposition alliance.

The opposition leaders, including JUI chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, former prime minister and Awaam Pakistan leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, and PkMAP leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai met at the house of former National Assembly speaker and PTI leader Asad Qaiser.

Several leaders, including the newly appointed PTI’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa President Junaid Akbar was present in the meeting, held at the Bani Gala residence of the former speaker on Tuesday.

Asad Qaiser had hosted a dinner in honor of the opposition leaders.

JUNAID AKBAR ADRESSES MARDAN

Meanwhile, on Wednesday (today) Junaid Akbar addressed a gathering at Mardan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, in preparations for PTI’s protest on February 8. He said, “I can call a spade a spade. Even if Imran Khan himself doesn’t accept the right thing, I will leave the presidency.”

He said that he will not let the [oppurtunists] steal the party. He admitted that there are factions in PTI, and reiterated that the party’s mandate was stolen in the general elections. “I am in favor of talking to institutions. “If [they] extend one hand, we will extend two hands.” He added that the PTI committed mistakes in the past, and now they are paying for it.

He said that the current government is the first in the history that has been forcibly given power. “If they understand the language of decency, well and good, otherwise we will act like thugs,” he said.

PTI is planning a protest rally in Lahore on February 8, at Minar-e-Pakistan, but is yet to receive a response from the district administration on official permission. Meanwhile, the federal government has issued a warning to the PTI against holding a protest. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said that the government prefers dialogue but is prepared to act if necessary.
