KARACHI: In a laudable effort to provide essential healthcare services and support to an underdeveloped region, the Pakistan Army organised a free medical camp coupled with a ration distribution initiative near the capital city of Mithi, Tharparkar.
Tharparkar has the lowest Human Development Index of the districts in Sindh. It also has high maternal and infant mortality rates.

The medical drive was established at the village of Posarko, 21.9 km from Mithi.
The camp saw the convergence of a dedicated team of military doctors and healthcare professionals. It catered to approximately 2,000 patients. There was a particular focus on maternal and child health.
The camp extended medical consultations, distributed crucial medications, and notably offered specialised care to about 700 children. Military doctors provided advice and examinations to local mothers and children who flocked to the camp.
The District Health Officer (DHO) and the Basic Health Unit (BHU) played a pivotal role in the coordination effort. They facilitated the transport of Tharparkar residents to the camp.
This was a vital move considering the harsh regional terrain. 42% of women in Pakistan report distance to facility as one of the primary impediments to healthcare access, according to the World Bank.
The DHO and BHU also ensured that the necessary medical materials were efficiently procured and disseminated to those in need. They collaborated with diligent Lady Health Workers in this regard.
This combined campaign received additional support from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), which contributed to the supply chain, facilitating the seamless distribution of goods.
In a parallel endeavor, a free ration camp was established within the village, to provide sustenance and relief to vulnerable residents.
Camp workers distributed food rations and milk cartons, especially to children. This outreach extended beyond the local residents, encompassing the Lady Health Workers who are known for tirelessly serving the community.
The patients and their relatives expressed appreciation to security forces for arranging the medical and ration camp initiative.
