PM Kakar: Elections may be held before January, February

ISLAMABAD: Interim Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar has hinted that elections could occur before January or February, emphasising that the responsibility for determining the election date lies with  Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

PM Kakar, while talking to the media, underscored the government’s focus on economic improvement, highlighting the pressing challenge of economic recovery for Pakistan at this juncture. He assured their commitment to uphold international agreements in this regard.

Furthermore, PM Kakar elucidated that the interim government’s responsibilities are clearly outlined in the constitution, emphasising that the prerogative of fixing the election date falls squarely within the purview of the ECP.

“ It is people’s democratic right to vote for their preferred candidates. All political parties will enjoy full permission to conduct their election campaigns without hindrance,” PM Kakar affirmed.

He also addressed the timeline of elections, explaining that once the ECP announces the election date, they will promptly fulfill their responsibilities by assisting the electoral body.

Meanwhile, he said that if the Supreme Court (SC) makes any decision, elections will take place within 90 days. He stressed that all the parties, including the government would be bound to adhere to the SC’s order.

“A level playing field will be provided to all participants in the electoral process, with no interference from any institution,” the interim premier added.
