The PTI held intraparty election in December 2023 after its founder Imran Khan stepped down from party leadership following lengthy legal battles. However, the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) declared the election invalid.

Earlier, the Supreme Court (SC) upheld the ECP’s decision last month that caused the party to lose its electoral symbol right before the general election.

Following the SC’s decision, PTI candidates ran as independents in the February 8 general election.
