ISLAMABAD: The inaugural session of the newly elected National Assembly took place today, after the assembly secretariat summoned the session despite refusal by the President.
However, an unexpected event took place today when the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers arrived clad in masks bearing the likeness of their incarcerated leader, Imran Khan.

Amidst a sea of Imran Khan’s photographs and fervent slogans for his release, PTI MPs highlighted their loyalty to the party’s founder and former chairman. Elected representatives of the party also brought Imran Khan’s posters along with them.
The protest comes at a time when PTI finds itself at a crossroads, grappling with the aftermath of Khan’s removal from the prime ministerial post through a no-confidence vote in April 2022. Despite the setback, PTI managed to secure victory in the recent general elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, albeit with candidates contesting as independents.

The sight of PTI politicians donning Imran Khan masks also represented their plea for his release, which also resonated with the party’s supporters. However, the move also came under criticism and humorous remarks on social media.
Followers of the party took pride in this mode of protest, while the critics argued that this showed non-seriousness of the elected officials. Some people also shared light-hearted opinions on the attire of the politicians behind the masks.
