PTI under fire for urging IMF to halt funding for cash-strapped Pakistan

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is under fire from politicians Khurram Dastgir and Jan Achakzai

QUETTA/LAHORE: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is under fire from politicians Khurram Dastgir and Jan Achakzai for its plan to send a letter to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), asking them to halt funding for Pakistan due to alleged unfair and rigged elections.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) member Khurram Dastgir slammed the PTI, claiming that the party was utilising political manoeuvres to “undermine the sanctity of various institutions for political gain”.

The former Minister of Foreign Affairs said that the PTI’s actions have repeatedly compromised Pakistan’s sovereignty in pursuit of its political agenda. He cited the party’s protests in the past, particularly in 2014, which resulted in delays to key infrastructure projects such as the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Dastgir accused the PTI of always escalating “tensions and instability within Pakistan”. He urged the PTI to reconsider its approach and refrain from actions that could worsen the already existing issues within the country.

The former minister criticised the party’s leadership, as well. He claimed the PTI’s leaders have shown a pattern of behaviour characterised by “chaos and disregard for established norms and institutions”.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Information and Public Relations Jan Achakzai took to social media to voice his concerns.

In a post shared on social media platform X, the minister condemned PTI’s decision to correspond with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Achakzai criticised PTI’s leadership for what he deemed as a “reckless and irresponsible move” that could potentially jeopardize Pakistan’s economic stability. He underlined the importance of prudent economic management and warned against actions that could undermine the country’s financial well-being.

Achakzai also condemned the PTI for allegedly prioritising political gain over the long-term interests of the country. He accused the party of seeking to sow chaos and instability for its own gain.

He asked the PTI to show greater responsibility and foresight in its decision-making process. He said that all political leaders in the country needed to prioritise the welfare and prosperity of the Pakistani people above all.
