ISLAMABAD: Senior leader of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and former Federal Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira said that the PPP has consistently advocated for elections to be conducted within the constitutional timeframe.
In a recent episode of the programme Upfront with Mona Alam on HUM News, Kaira’s statement shed light on the differing perspectives between PPP and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) regarding elections. While PPP has been vocal about timely elections, PML-N has questioned PPP’s stance, pointing out that PPP didn’t raise concerns during the Council of Common Interests (CCI) meeting about the digital census, which indicated a possible delay in elections.

Alam posed a question about PPP’s understanding of the constitution and whether there was a change of heart regarding their stance on elections. She also inquired if there was any meeting held by PPP to discuss the election scenario.
In response to the alleged meeting within PPP regarding election delays, Kaira clarified: “To my knowledge, no such meeting had occurred.”
He stressed that individual opinions expressed by his colleagues might not represent the official stance of PPP.
Qamar Zaman Kaira reiterated that the PPP’s unwavering stance has been in favour of conducting elections within the bounds of the constitution. He highlighted the recent statement by PPP Vice President Sherry Rehman who urged the Election Commission of Pakistan to hold timely elections after dissolution of assemblies.
