Scrutiny begins for senate election nomination papers

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has initiated the examination of nomination papers submitted by aspirants vying for seats in the Senate.
The scrutiny process, currently underway at the Election Commission’s premises, is slated to continue until 3 PM, with thorough evaluations being conducted to ensure adherence to electoral regulations and criteria.

In Punjab, a significant number of candidates have thrown their hats into the ring, with 28 hopefuls submitting their nomination papers for the 12 available Senate seats. Among these submissions, 17 candidates have staked their claims for general seats, while an additional 5 contenders have vied for positions designated for women.
Additionally, technocrats and three candidates for each minority seat have formally submitted their candidacy papers, reflecting the diverse array of interests and representation in the electoral fray.
Two notable entrants into the Senate race are Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Finance Minister Aurangzeb Khan who are contesting the election as independent candidates.

Among other notable figures who have filed their nomination papers are Ahad Cheema, Pervez Rasheed, Musadik Malik, and Nasir Butt. Additionally, former caretaker prime minister Anwar ul Haq Kakar has also thrown in his hat for the elections to be held on April 2.
Appeals against approval and rejection of papers can be filed till March 21, which will be decided by March 25. The revised list will be released on March 26, ECP said. Candidates will be able to withdraw nomination papers till March 27.
