KU Mass Com Department launches “Café de Comm” showcasing student talent, industry collaboration

KARACHI: Final-year Advertising and Public Relations students of the Department of Mass Communication at the University of Karachi launched “Café de Comm,” an innovative initiative blending education with real-world brand experience, under the guidance of Associate Professor Dr Raana Afzal.
The project transformed into a bustling café environment that attracted over a thousand attendees, providing a platform for students to showcase their talents in advertising, public relations, and event management.
“Café de Comm” featured a range of brands, including “Meetha and Teekha”, a home-based bakery known for its traditional desserts with modern flair; “Bincy”, an authentic perfume brand offering popular international names like Hugo Boss, Davidoff, Gucci, Azzaro, and Calvin Klein; “Baggie Beach”, which presented affordable, trendy, and durable bags; and “Cake in Process”, specializing in homemade cakes with a variety of flavors and custom designs. Partner brands, “Vital Tea” and “Frais Snow Flakes”, further enriched the event’s brand experience.
This project underscored the Department of Mass Communication’s commitment to equipping students with the skills needed for today’s fast-evolving media landscape.
It allowed students to apply advertising and public relations principles in real-time, sharpening their creativity, entrepreneurship, and event management abilities.
Key highlights of the event included: Hands-on experience in brand management, marketing, and promotions; execution of effective communication strategies and direct audience engagement; collaboration between students, local businesses, and industry professionals, and portfolio enhancement, providing students with competitive edge as they transition to professional careers.
By launching “Café de Comm,” the University of Karachi not only fostered practical learning but also strengthened industry-academia links, preparing its graduates to thrive in the professional sphere.
