KARACHI: The Vice Chancellor of the University of Karachi Professor Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi along with the registrar, deans of various faculties, faculty members, employees, non-teaching staff, and KU’s alumni association—the Unikarians Internationals—warmly welcomed the fresh students of the batch 2025 “Nawardan Jamia” at the KU Silver Jubilee Gate on Wednesday.
The KU Senate and Syndicate members, President of Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi Mohammad Ahmed Shah, former governor of the State Bank of Pakistan Dr Ishrat Husain, President of Unikarians International Professor Ejaz Ahmed Faruqi, distinguished graduates of the University of Karachi were also present on this occasion. They warmly welcomed the fresh batch of students.
The event began with Hafiz-e-Quran reciting the Holy Quran before the new students and others entered one of the main gates and proceeded towards the administrative building. Many students and parents attended the grand central orientation ceremony, which was held adjacent to the KU New Administration Building.
Addressing the ceremony, the KU VC Professor Dr Khalid Iraqi said that without education, no country or nation can progress. He shared that the Founder of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, regarded education as a matter of life and death, but unfortunately, investment in education is considered a burden in Pakistan.
He mentioned that developed countries have provided high-quality education to their generations, which resulted in creating awareness in their nation to make correct decisions about their future.
The KU VC Professor Dr Khalid Iraqi observed that nations that prioritize education and invest in it have set examples of innovation and invention for the entire world. He stated that success is achieved through hard work, not merely desires.
He mentioned that we must respect others’ opinions while expressing our own. Since its inception, the University of Karachi has been striving to introduce Pakistani youth to the pursuit of knowledge. “I congratulate the students and their parents for making it possible for their children to access higher education despite adverse financial conditions.”
The former Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan Dr Ishrat Husain said that countries that cannot provide education and higher education to their nation, especially its young generation, can never progress.
He informed the audience until 1990, India and Bangladesh were far behind us, and other countries were trying to understand the reasons for Pakistan’s rapid development. India and Bangladesh, which were once behind us, have focused so much on education that today the enrollment rate in higher education is 33 percent in India and Bangladesh, while in Pakistan, the rate is still 10 to 11 percent, and the remaining youth cannot pursue higher education.
He mentioned that in the current era, the world is moving towards a knowledge economy rather than relying on natural resources and industries. Addressing the students, Dr Ishrat Husain advised them to avoid shortcuts and rote learning. “If you cannot retain and apply your knowledge, your degrees, certificates, and diplomas are useless.”
During his address, the President of the ACP Karachi Mohammad Ahmed Shah mentioned that modern technology has made everything accessible to you, and it depends on how much you benefit from it.
“You need to become a person of character and not just obtain a degree. The University of Karachi not only provides education but also shapes your personality.”
Ahmed Shah shared that being born into a wealthy family is not necessary for success. Look within yourself and utilize your abilities. Despite all difficulties, confidently and respectfully express your views and develop the habit of thinking, researching, and questioning, as questioning holds great importance.
The President of Unikarians Internationals Professor Ejaz Ahmed Faruqi expressed that once you obtain your degree from here, you will realize the value of the degree from the University of Karachi. You need to focus entirely on your education, and once you graduate, you will recognize the enhancement in your personality along with your degree.
The President of the Karachi University Teachers’ Association Dr Mohsin Ali said that the University of Karachi not only benefits students with knowledge but also provides excellent training and character-building. The Advisor to Student Affairs Dr Nosheen Raza and the Director of KU’s SYM Professional Development Centre Dr Syed Asim Ali, and others also spoke on this occasion.
