Aaqib Javed appointed as Sri Lankan team’s ‘fast bowling coach’

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka Cricket has appointed former Pakistani pace bowler Aaqib Javed as their national team’s ‘fast bowling coach.’

Javed will be part of the coaching setup until the conclusion of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which will take place in the West Indies and the United States in June 2024.

With an illustrious international career boasting 163 ODIs and 22 Test matches for Pakistan, Javed clinched a total of 236 international wickets. A member of Pakistan’s victorious 1992 World Cup team, Javed has garnered coaching experience with various national teams.

His coaching journey includes stints as the bowling coach for the Pakistan national team, head coach of the UAE national team, and involvement with the Afghanistan national team in a developmental capacity.

Under his tutelage, the UAE National Team achieved ODI and T20I status, participated in the ICC Men’s 50 Over World Cup in 2015, and contested in the qualifiers for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2014.

Additionally, Javed steered the Pakistan U19 team to a World Cup triumph in 2004 and contributed as the bowling coach during Pakistan’s victorious campaign in the 2009 T20 World Cup in England.

Currently serving as the Director of Cricket Operations and Head Coach of the Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League, Javed brings a wealth of experience to his new role with Sri Lanka Cricket.

“We warmly welcome Aaqib and believe that his vast international experience, both as a player and coach, will bolster our bowlers’ preparations for the upcoming major international competitions, including the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup,” stated Mr. Ashley De Silva, CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket.

Aaqib’s engagement with Sri Lanka Cricket commences with immediate effect.
