ISLAMABAD: Cricketer Waqas Maqsood has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a brief international career that began against New Zealand in 2018.
The 37-year-old fast bowler played his first and only international match against New Zealand at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, where he impressed by taking two wickets in just 1.5 overs.
In domestic T20 cricket, Maqsood featured for Karachi Kings and Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), claiming 27 wickets in 20 matches.
Maqsood is not the only player stepping away from international cricket recently, as a wave of retirements continues among national team players.
Left-arm fast bowler Usman Shinwari also announced his retirement from international cricket on September 9. His career, though promising, was frequently hampered by injuries. Shinwari, part of Pakistan’s proud tradition of producing quality fast bowlers, played 1 Test, 17 ODIs, and 16 T20 Internationals between December 2013 and December 2019. During this time, he picked up 34 wickets in ODIs and 13 in T20Is. Notably, he debuted in all three formats against Sri Lanka, a team against whom he also delivered some of his most memorable performances.
Meanwhile, Asif Ali, known for his power hitting in the middle order, has also retired from all formats of international cricket. The 33-year-old played 21 ODIs and 58 T20Is for Pakistan, earning a reputation as a hard-hitting finisher.
In a post shared on his social media accounts, Asif Ali wrote, “Today, I announce my retirement from international cricket. Alhamdulillah, wearing the Pakistan jersey has been the greatest honour of my life and serving my country on the cricket field has been my proudest chapter.”
