Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan announces retirement

Shakib Al Hasan

KANPUR: Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan shocked the world on Thursday when he announced that the second test match against India may be his last.

Despite wanting to participate in the Dhaka Test match against South Africa in October, Shakib worries that he may not be able to.

Due to the uncertainty currently in Bangladesh, Cricket South Africa is yet to grant security clearance for the upcoming series. This means that the second test against India starting on Friday September 27, may be his last in the format.

As Shakib was a member of parliament for the Awami League-led government, there have been complications regarding his return to Bangladesh. He is facing murder charges alongside other members of the Awami League party, who are being accused of culpability in the brutal police violence which led to the deaths of dozens and wounded hundreds.

“I am available for the South Africa series but since there’s a lot happening back home, naturally not everything depends on me,” Hasan said, adding that since he is a citizen of Bangladesh, he “shouldn’t have any problem going back.”

His worry is his “safety and security in Bangladesh.” Shakib stated that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is trying to ensure that he can “play and feel safe” and that he can “leave the country without a hitch.”

Shakib, who is regarded by many to be Bangladesh’s greatest cricketer, has made over 14,000 runs and taken over 700 wickets. He also holds the record for most runs and wickets in T20Is by all Bangladesh players. He has made 4600 runs in tests and taken 242 wickets.

Shakib stated that his future appearances with Bangladesh will be limited to One Day Internationals (ODIs), confirming that he has played his last T20 for the side.
