STAVANGER: World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju stunned the sports world by beating Magnus Carlsen for the first time on Monday at the Norway Chess 2025.
Gukesh got his revenge on the Norwegian world number 1, who after beating the Indian world champion earlier in the first round of the tournament, declared himself the “king” of chess.
Early on, their second meeting of the tournament was looking like it would end in similar fashion to the first. However, the pressure of the clock seemingly forced Carlsen into committing a blunder with a knight, leaving Gukesh with an opening to turn around a losing endgame.

Carlsen wasn’t thrilled to lose, slamming his fist into the table before apologising and subsequently taking his leave. Gukesh didn’t seem to mind the outburst much, telling Chess.com that “I’ve also banged a lot of tables in my career.”
The 19 year is now just one point behind the joint leaders of the tournament, Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana, who both have 9 ½ points.
“I mean, not the way I wanted it to be, but okay, I’ll take it,” Gukesh said in reference to his win over the world number 1.
