Dodgers win World Series in comeback game

NEW YORK: The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the New York Yankees for a fourth time and won the World Series on Thursday, after going down 4-0 in the early innings.

YANKEES TAKE EARLY LEAD

The Yankees showed that they came to play from the very beginning. After Gerrit Cole recorded a 1-2-3 inning, the Yankees batters proceeded to capitalise. Aaron Judge finally found his breakthrough, homering for the first time in the series to right centre field. It was a two-run blast as Juan Soto had been walked just prior. Jazz Chisolm Jr came up to the plate next, and sent the ball deep to right centre field once again, making the score 3-0 for the Yankees.  

Another 1-2-3 inning for Gerrit Cole would be followed by another run on the board added for New York. Anthony Volpe would double to left, before making his way to third as Austin Wells grounded out to first. Alex Verdugo would bring Volpe home after he singled to right field.

The Dodgers would finally get a runner on base in the top of the third as Gavin Lux fought Cole for a walk. But with two outs already recorded, it only took Shohei Ohtani flying out to left to end the inning. And once again, New York increased their lead with a rocket to right field, courtesy of Giancarlo Stanton.

DODGERS COMEBACK

Things were looking good for the Yankees, as Cole was dominating on the mound, but that all changed in the fifth inning. First, Enrique Hernandez singled to right. Then he would advance to second on a fielding error while Tommy Edman made his way to first. Another fielding error would doom New York, as Will Smith grounded into a fielder’s choice to shortstop, however Volpe would make another throwing error, and the bases would be loaded.

Cole would do his best to hold the Dodgers back, striking out both Lux and Ohtani in four pitches. However, he wouldn’t have as much success with Mookie Betts, who hit an infield single to first, allowing Hernandez to score, while Smith and Edman advanced on the bases. Freddie Freeman would continue his World Series heroics on single to centre which allowed both Edman and Smith to score, and advanced Betts to third. Teoscar Hernandez would tie the game on a double to centre that scored Betts and Freeman.

The Yankees would pull back ahead in the bottom of the sixth, as Soto scored on a sacrifice fly by Stanton after being walked earlier in the innings. But it wouldn’t be enough to stop the Dodgers, who scored two runs in the top of the eight. E. Hernandez would single to left, before advancing on an infield single to shortstop by Edman, which saw the NLCS MVP make his way to first. Then, Smith would be walked, loading the bases. Lux would tie the game on a sacrifice fly to centre, which brought E. Hernandez home. Another sacrifice fly, this time from Betts, would bring Edman home, allowing the Dodgers to take the lead.

Freeman on fire, Dodgers one away from winning World Series

New York would get two runners on base in the bottom of the eight, but it wouldn’t amount to anything. Walker Buehler would secure the win in the bottom of the ninth with a 1-2-3 inning.

The Los Angeles won the World Series in five games. It is their second World Series win in five years, with the last coming in the shortened 2020 season. Their last World Series win in a full season came in 1988.
