Former Liverpool ace Kewell named head coach of Vietnam’s Hanoi FC
HANOI: Former Liverpool winger and Australian international Harry Kewell has been appointed as head coach of Hanoi FC, one of Vietnam’s top-tier football clubs, the team announced on Saturday.
The 47-year-old, who also had notable spells with Leeds United and Galatasaray, is taking on a new challenge in Southeast Asia after a mixed managerial career.
While Kewell enjoyed a glittering playing career — featuring in the Premier League and on the World Cup stage — his coaching journey has been far less successful. He was sacked by Yokohama F. Marinos in July 2024, just six months into the role.
Earlier, he struggled to make an impact in lower-league English football, managing clubs like Crawley Town, Notts County, and Oldham Athletic, before being dismissed by Barnet in 2021 after failing to win any of his first seven matches.
In a statement, Hanoi FC said:
“Harry Kewell, a big name who was once famous in the Premier League and competed in the World Cup, has come to Hanoi. This is also a testament to the attraction and ambition of Hanoi Football Club.”
Kewell’s appointment marks a significant move for Vietnamese football, as the country continues to attract international talent in its bid to raise the profile of its domestic league.
