WEB DESK: Australian batter Glenn Maxwell retired from the One Day International (ODI) format on Monday, but has confirmed he will be available for next years T20 World Cup.
The announcement was made on the Final Word Podcast, with Maxwell stating that his body just couldn’t keep up with the demands of the format. In 2022, Maxwell broke his leg and has since reported soreness following his matches in the recent Champions Trophy.
“I always said I wasn’t going to hand my position over if I felt like I was still good enough to play. I didn’t want to just hold on for a couple of series and almost play for selfish reasons.”
The 36 year old is one of the best limited over players that Australia has ever seen, scoring 3990 runs across the 136 innings he’s played, with an average of 33.81 and a strike rate of 126.70. Maxwell’s most momentous knock came against Afghanistan in the 2023 world cup, when he scored a monstrous unbeaten 201 off 128 deliveries, while limping throughout most of it due to crippling cramps in both legs and a back spasm.
“Everything that you’ve worked hard for, the peak of your powers, being able to put it in front of the world to see and it’s almost like saying, this is the best of me, you can either take it or leave it, but this is all I’ve got.”

In the same tournament, Maxwell posted the fastest ODI century in World Cup history against the Netherlands, scoring a 40 ball century. The Aussie has made a total of 23 half centuries and four tons in the 50 over format.
Maxwell has also taken 77 wickets in ODIs, with an economy of 5.46. His best figures came against India in 2023. Despite a disappointing performance with the bat, only making five runs before being bowled by Jasprit Bumrah, Maxwell took four wickets to help Australia win by 66 runs.
While the Australian batting all-rounder will not be available for the upcoming 2027 ODI World Cup, he will be available for the next year’s shorter alternative.
“They are moving in such a clear direction so this give them the best look at what the line-up is leading into that next World Cup. I know how important that planning is.”
In T20Is, Maxwell has scored 2664 runs across 106 innings at an average of 29.93. His high score of an unbeaten 145 off 65 came against Sri Lanka in 2016.
