ICC announces equal prize money for men’s and women’s teams

DUBAI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Thursday to provide equal prize money to both men’s and women’s teams at ICC events.

While talking to the media, ICC official said that under this new policy, the teams competing in tournaments including  the T20 and one-day international World Cups will receive the same prize money for their tournament rankings and match victories.

ICC Chair Greg Barclay hailed this development as a “momentous occasion” in the history of cricket.

“I am delighted that men’s and women’s cricketers competing at ICC global events will now be rewarded equally,” he added.

The ICC official said that in the last men’s 50-over World Cup held in 2019, the prize money amounted to $10 million, nearly three times the $3.5 million offered at the 2022 women’s World Cup.

“The upcoming women’s football World Cup will offer a total of $152 million in prize money and player participation fees, which is significantly lower than the $440 million allocated to national associations during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar,” the official added.
