Iga Swiatek stunned by Putintseva at Wimbledon 2024


World number one Iga Swiatek faced a shocking defeat at Wimbledon as she succumbed to Yulia Putintseva in a highly charged third-round match on Court One.

Swiatek arrived at Wimbledon on a 21-match winning streak. She seemed set for victory after taking the first set. However, Putintseva made a strong comeback as she dominated the next two sets to secure a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win.

The match started with Swiatek controlling the first set with her groundstrokes and solid serving. She appeared to be on track to advance smoothly to the next round.

However, Putintseva, quickly turned the tables in the second set. She broke Swiatek’s serve twice and played aggressively.

One point during the tournament, Swiatek left the court before the start of the deciding set when the crowd quite unkindly booed her. The interruption seemed to have hit Swiatek hard, as she struggled to regain her earlier form.

Putintseva capitalised on the moment of weakness, hitting smash upon smash and eventually won the entire match.

Swiatek later conceded that she was tired playing on the clay courts when she won the French Open. The world number one expressed her disappointment at exiting the tournament earlier than expected but remained optimistic about the rest of the season.

On the other hand, Putintseva expressed her elation at the victory. She pointed our her game-play and strategy of playing fast and keeping Swiatek on the defensive. She credited her aggressive approach and ability to execute her shots effectively.

Putintseva’s victory over Swiatek marks a significant milestone in her career, as it was her first win over the Polish player in five attempts.
