India and Australia battle for glory in World Cup final today

Ind vs Aus

AHMEDABAD: In a showdown for the ages, India and Australia lock horns today in the grand finale of the ICC Men’s World Cup 2023. The stakes are high as both teams vie for the prestigious crown that signifies cricketing supremacy. The battle will unfold at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Umpires Richard Illingworth and Richard Kettleborough will serve as the on-field umpires, with Joel Wilson and Chris Gaffaney will be the third and fourth umpires, respectively. The match will be played at 1:30 p.m. Pakistan Time.

Australia has five of these ODI World Cup crowns, from 1987, 1999, 2003, 2007, and 2015. India has two, from 1983 and 2011. A little detour from today’s champions, but Pakistan has one too, from 1992. However, since today the greens will be watching from the sidelines, so let’s revert the focus back to the intense battle that is expected to unfold between the blues and the yellows.

Pitch advantage not much of a factor, says Australian skipper

Australia’s journey to the final hasn’t been without its challenges. After finding themselves at the bottom of the table early on, they mounted a remarkable comeback, securing eight consecutive victories. India, in contrast, has displayed dominance from the outset, crushing oppositions with ease.

The road to the final for both teams has been paved with memorable moments. Australia weathered a storm, being 91 for 7 while chasing 292 against Afghanistan. They also faced white-hot spells, as witnessed in Tabraiz Shamsi’s performance in the semi-final, and determined opposition chases, exemplified by New Zealand’s challenge in Dharamsala.

India, on the other hand, managed to bowl out oppositions for below 80 twice in the run up to the finals. Likewise, twice they managed to out a total of over 350 while batting first.

It is not just Australia and India. The entire tournament has been a whirlwind ride. Virat Kohli’s journey to achieve 50 ODI hundreds was only slightly overshadowed by Glenn Maxwell’s fastest century in World Cup history, which itself was overpowered by his “201 – not out” against Afghanistan.

Then there was the controversy of a contentious timed-out dismissal. New Zealand’s narrow miss of the victory against top teams. The ripples of this tournament reached the home countries of some teams too. Pakistan triggered change of the team leadership, and Sri Lanka found themselves grappling with severe administrative challenges.

Bangladesh and Afghanistan might be the only teams who could take solace in their efforts even if they fell short of touching the mark they were hoping to achieve.

Today, India and Australia stand at the pinnacle, each having contributed its own chapter to the gripping story of the World Cup. The stage is set for a thrilling ICC World Cup final match as India and Australia prepare to etch their names in cricketing history once more. The world watches as the two giants clash for glory!
