India clinch Asian Champions trophy title

CHENNAI: India defeated Malaysia 4-3 to clinch Asian Champions Trophy at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium on Saturday.

Jugraj Singh scored the first goal for India in the first quarter before Kamal Kamal Abu Arzai equalised to make it 1-1.

In the second quarter, Razie Rahim converted a penalty corner to give Malaysia a 2-1 lead.

A penalty corner from Aminudin Muhamad late in the second quarter provided the visitors a 3-1 lead.

However, Harmanpreet Singh converted a penalty stroke in the third quarter to reduce the 2-goal deficit before Gurjant scored an equalizer, making it 3-3.

A late winner from Akashdeep sealed the match for the hosts as the Chennai crowd erupted with joy.

The victory gave India a record fourth title, making it the most successful team in the event. Pakistan has won the tournament thrice.
