INDIAN WELLS: British tennis player Jack Draper secured his first ever ATP Masters 1000 title after defeating Danish player Holger Rune in straight sets at the Indian Wells final.

First Set

Draper, 23, set the tone immediately, getting his first break of the match in the very first game of the first set. After winning his own service game, he would get another break. Another service game win for Draper would put him up four games to nil, putting Rune, 21, in dire state.

Rune was able to win his third service game, but not without a great deal of struggle. Draper looked to be on the verge of another break, taking 40-30 lead in the game, but a vicious forehand placed to the right of the Briton would equalise. Rune would seal his first game win on his second advantage point.

A four-point game win for Draper would follow, and a four-point game win for Rune came after that. Draper would close the first set in the eighth game. After Draper got set point with a swift ace, Rune closed the set for him with a backhand return that ended up in the net.

Second Set

The second set started equally bad as the first for Rune, as he once again lost his opening service game after choosing to leave a return from Draper that he believed would land out of bounds. Draper would win service game without much opposition, before pushing Rune to fight tooth and nail for his second service as he forced a deuce with a stunning cross court drive. However, Rune eventually won the game on his second advantage by sending Draper running side to side, before ending his chase with a smash.

The Dane would equally pressure Draper in the next game with two deuces. But, the British player took the game on his second advantage. The two would then each win their next service game.

Draper’s fourth break of the match followed in the seventh game of the second set. It was another back and fourth game in which Draper took the lead, earning a break point, but Rune managed to equalise. Draper took advantage off a cross court forehand from Rune that landed just wide of the side line. Another error from Rune, which saw the ball bounce off the top of the net and land out of bounds, sealed the game for Draper.

The match ended in the next game. Rune was able to hold back Draper on his first match point, after the Briton sent a quick forehand beyond the baseline. But, the next point would win Draper his first ever ATP title. A strong forehand sent Rune running to return with a cross court backhand, but it landed wide of the side line.

Not only did Draper win his first ever ATP Masters title in straight sets (6-2, 6-2), but he is now ranked seventh in ATP men’s singles following the Indian Wells 2025.
