Larsen’s late double dumps West Ham out of League Cup

WEB DESK: Wolverhampton Wanderers staged a stunning late comeback to beat West Ham United 3-2 at Molineux in the League Cup on Tuesday night, with substitute Jorgen Strand Larsen scoring twice in the space of three minutes.

The Norwegian forward, introduced in the 73rd minute, struck in the 82nd and 84th to hand Wolves their first win of the season and send West Ham crashing out. His brace overturned what looked like a comfortable position for Graham Potter’s side, who had led 2-1 with less than 10 minutes left on the clock.

Earlier, Rodrigo Gomes opened the scoring for Wolves just before halftime, reacting quickest after Hwang Hee-chan’s penalty had cannoned back off the post. But the visitors turned the game around after the restart: Tomas Soucek levelled with a header five minutes into the second half, and Lucas Paquetá nodded home in the 63rd minute to put West Ham 2-1 ahead.

Just when Potter’s men seemed poised to progress, Larsen turned the tie on its head. His first came from a sharp finish inside the box, before he punished West Ham again almost immediately with another clinical strike, sparking wild celebrations among the home supporters.

The result deepens the pressure on Potter, whose side had already endured heavy league defeats against Chelsea and Sunderland this month. To compound matters, captain Jarrod Bowen was involved in a heated confrontation with a frustrated supporter after the final whistle, before being led away by teammates. Bowen later apologised on Instagram, admitting he “needed to set a better example,” while Potter attempted to play down the incident, calling for unity between players and fans.
