Madrid and Atlético draw in controversial match

Madrid

MADRID: Atlético Madrid were able to equalise in stoppage time, forcing a draw against Real Madrid after their fans forced the match to be postponed on Sunday.

Atlético and Madrid were level at half time, with both sides struggling to create chances. Madrid endured an early scare from Akexander Sorloth, who cut into Madrid’s box while fighting off Antonio Rudiger. Sorloth struck it along the ground from well inside the box, but it was an easy stop by Thibaut Courtois.

A couple minutes later Madrid returned fire from long range, as Federico Valverde blasted the ball, forcing Atlético keeper Jan Oblak into a leaping stop. Madrid found themselves with another opportunity in the 35th minute. Jude Bellingham struck the ball from the edge of the box, but the lack of elevation made it an easy stop for Oblak.

It was Real Madrid defender Eder Militao that finally broke through in the 64th minute. A cross from Vinicius Junior went just over Aurelien Tchouameni’s head, landing in front of Militao. Two touches later and Madrid were up 1-0.

Then controversy hit the field as objects did. Atlético fans lost their cool and unable to smother their own anger, the referee had to do it for them. The match was postponed and both teams were sent back to their locker rooms.

The outburst was apparently the result of some celebrating, and possibly taunting courtesy of Militao and Courtois.

“What the fans did wasn’t right but we are not helping when we provoke them,” said Atlético coach Diego Simeone who asked fans to behave, but didn’t hold back from criticising Madrid’s players for fanning the flames.

Atlético attempted to mount an attack of their own when the game resumed, with Samuel Lino producing a beautiful strike after making his way into Madrid’s box as he fought off two defenders. It forced an equally beautiful save from Courtois who leaped to cover the top left corner of the goal.

It looked to be all over when Atlético managed one more attack in the sixth minute of stoppage time. Angel Correa received a perfect pass to find himself with the ball inside the box. With Militao right at his back and Courtois right in front, Correa was able to stumble his way through to equalise.
