Matthew Breetzke made history by becoming the first batter to score 150 runs on his ODI debut

Matthew Breetzke Batting

Matthew Breetzke made history by becoming the first player to score 150 on his One Day International (ODI) debut. His remarkable achievement also made him the fourth South African to score a century in their first ODI. In a tri-series match against New Zealand, Breetzke’s performance was crucial as South Africa posted a total of 304 for 6.

Although not part of the Champions Trophy squad, Breetzke joined the ranks of Colin Ingram, Temba Bavuma, and Reeza Hendricks as South Africans who have hit a hundred on debut. Nearly half of South Africa’s runs came from his bat. His ability to score square of the wicket was a highlight, with over a third of his runs (58) coming in that area, and his cut shot was particularly effective. Though his innings started slowly and he seemed to get stuck in the middle overs at times, Breetzke, along with Wiaan Mulder, who scored 64 runs off 60 balls, formed a solid partnership. Their 131-run stand for the fourth wicket helped anchor South Africa’s innings.

Breetzke’s milestone came with a six off fast bowler Ben Sears, before he was dismissed by Matt Henry, caught by Michael Bracewell in the 46th over. Mulder’s quickfire 64, which included five fours and a six, provided the finishing touch as South Africa ended up with 304 runs.

Record-breaking debut scores in Men’s ODIs

Due to top players engaging in a Twenty20 league or recovering from injuries, South Africa had to field four debutants in this match.
