Muhammad Amir signs contract with Derbyshire

Amir

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani bowler Mohammad Amir has secured a contract with English county Derbyshire as an overseas player for the first half of the 2024 season.

Former Pakistan coach and South African-Australian cricketer Mickey Arthur, who leads the county, took to his twitter to break the news.

Earlier, the English media reported that Amir will be signed as a local player. Derbyshire, on the other hand, said on Twitter that the fast bowler will join them as an overseas player.

According to the international media, the 31-year-old player retired from international cricket in 2020 but has been a prominent figure in T20 leagues around the world.

The celebrated cricketer had participated in various tournaments including the Pakistan Super League (PSL), Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), and the Caribbean Premier League.

Amir’s association with Derbyshire will also mark his return to county cricket. He has represented Essex and Gloucestershire in the past before taking up this new opportunity with Derbyshire.

The fast bowler’s career has been fraught with challenges including a five-year ban from international cricket imposed by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 2010 for his role in a spot-fixing case.

He, along with Mohammad Asif and Salman Butt, was found guilty in the incident.

Amir made a successful comeback to the international cricket in 2016 and played a key role in Pakistan’s victory in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017.

His spellbinding performance in the final against India, where he eliminated major players like Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, and Virat Kohli, earned him widespread acclaim.
