Olympic medal count: Australia leads, France ends Fiji’s rugby reign

PARIS: As the Paris Olympics progress, Australia is currently leading the Olympic medal table with five medals—three gold and two silver.

The United States (US) follows closely with five medals as well, comprising one gold, two silver, and two bronze. France, with four medals—one gold, two silver, and one bronze—holds third place. Meanwhile, China has claimed three medals: two gold and one bronze.

Australia tops the medal table

Australia has had a strong showing so far, particularly Ariarne Titmus’s performance in the women’s 400-meter freestyle. Titmus led from start to finish, securing gold with a time of 3:57.49.

The Australian team also excelled in the women’s 4×100-meter freestyle relay, setting an Olympic record with a time of 3:28.92. The US took silver in that race with an American record time of 3:30.20.

France breaks Fiji’s rugby sevens dominance

In rugby sevens, France captured gold by defeating Fiji 28-7 in a decisive match. Antoine Dupont played a crucial role, scoring two tries and creating another, effectively ending Fiji’s two-time Olympic reign in the sport.

China claims first gold

China’s Chang Yani and Chen Yiwen won the first gold medal of the Paris Games in the women’s synchronised 3-meter springboard diving. The victory is part of China’s broader goal to achieve a clean sweep in diving events, a feat they narrowly missed at Tokyo 2020.

USA highlights

The US team saw significant successes in swimming, with Kassidy Cook and Sarah Bacon earning silver in the women’s synchronised 3m springboard, the first US medal of the 2024 Games.

The US men’s 4×100-meter freestyle relay team won gold, while Katie Ledecky secured bronze in the 400m freestyle, marking her eleventh Olympic medal.

Georgian shooter sets record

Nino Salukvadze of Georgia made history as the first woman to compete in ten Olympic Games. Her latest participation occurred in the women’s 10-meter air pistol event, though she finished 38th. She will have another opportunity in the 25-meter pistol event later this week.
