Pakistan finish dismal fifth in Asian champions trophy hockey


CHENNAI: Pakistan beat China 6-1 to secure the fifth place in Asian champions trophy hockey tournament.

After missing out on the semi-finals owing to a lackluster performance in the round-robin stage of the tournament, Pakistan put an impressive show from the start, scoring 4 goals in the first quarter.

Muhammad Ammad and Muhammad Sufyan contributed with two goals apiece, while Hanan Shahid and Abdul Rana chipped in with one goal each

For China, Benhai Chen scored their solitary goal of the match.

After suffering a 4-0 defeat in their last match against arch-rivals India, Pakistan was eliminated from top four spot, marking team’s worst performance since the inception of tournament in 2011.

Out of the five matches in the round-robin stage, Pakistan only secured one victory.

In their first match against Malaysia, Pakistan suffered a 3-1 defeat. In their next 2 matches, they drew 1-1 against Korea before a 3-3 result against Japan. Their only win in the round robin stage came gainst China with a 2-1 scorline.
