HANGZHOU: A Pakistani athlete participating in the ongoing Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou drew international attention as she continued running long after the race had officially concluded.
This remarkable yet distressing spectacle was a poignant symbol of the challenges that many Pakistani athletes face. It exposed the systemic issues of underfunding, lack of proper training facilities, and limited support from the government.
The incident occurred during the women’s 1,500m race, where the Pakistani athlete struggled to keep pace with her competitors. As the race came to an end, she found herself significantly behind the leading pack. Despite the clear indication that the race was over, she persevered to complete the grueling course.

Social media users wasted no time in calling the Pakistan Olympics Association (POA) to task. One user posted on X, saying that the leadership of the POA, under its President Lt. Gen. (R) Syed Arif Hasan, has fallen short in providing the necessary resources and guidance to nurture the country’s sports talents adequately.

Pakistan has a rich sporting heritage, with athletes who have excelled on the global stage in the past. However, recent years have seen a decline in performance due to the neglect of sports development.
Some netizens also highlighted the irresponsibility of the authorities in nominating an athlete who was not fit for the competition. However, some people chose to appreciate the courage that the athlete showed, not just in the determination to complete the distance, but also for competing in the first place.
The Pakistani athlete’s struggle in Hangzhou highlights the urgent need for a comprehensive overhaul of the sports infrastructure and support systems in Pakistan. Athletes require access to modern training facilities, quality coaching, and financial support to compete at the highest levels of international sports.
