That playoff will feature Egyptian club Pyramids FC, the current African champions, facing the winner of a match between Cruz Azul, the Central American champions from Mexico, and the eventual champions of the Copa Libertadores.
The Copa Libertadores is currently in the semi-final stage, with two Brazilian clubs still in contention. Palmeiras are up against LDU Quito of Ecuador, while Flamengo face Racing Club of Argentina. The final is set for November 29.
Historically, the Intercontinental Cup which had been held from 1960 to 2004, featured a showdown between the European and South American champions.
In 2005, the tournament evolved into the FIFA Club World Cup, expanding to include champions from all continents. That competition was revamped again this year as a 32-team tournament held every four years, with Chelsea winning the inaugural edition of the new format.
