Recap: Bumrah dominates as India return fire in Australia’s innings

Bumrah

PERTH: Jasprit Bumrah returned fire, taking four wickets in Australia’s first innings on Friday after the Aussies limtied India to only 150 runs.

Australia stand at 67 for 7 after 27 overs at the end of day one. They trail by 83 runs.

JASPRIT BUMRAH

India’s skipper took charge immediately, dismissing three Australian batsmen within seven overs. The first fell in the third over, as Bumrah found the pad of the debutant, Nathan McSweeney, as the skipper’s delivery snuck past the Australian’s attempt to defend. The umpire didn’t raise his finger, likely thinking there was a brush with the bat. However, after consulting with his fielders, Bumrah reviewed and Hawk-Eye showed that the middle-stump was a goner. McSweeney managed to make 10 runs off 13 deliveries, hitting two fours along the way, before he was sent off.

Bumrah’s next two wickets came back to back in the seventh over. The Indian fast bowler’s delivery found the thin edge of Khawaja’s bat before Kohli took the catch at slip. On the very next ball, and the first ball he faced, Steven Smith was dismissed for a duck. The 141 ks delivery from Bumrah crashed into Smith’s pad as the Aussie failed to defend. This time, the umpire’s finger went up right away, to Smith’s dismay.

Australia’s skipper Pat Cummins was dismissed in the 25th over, giving Bumrah his fourth wicket of the match. It was captain on captain violence, as Bumrah’s delivery found the edge of Cummins’ bat on its way to wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant’s gloves.

SIRAJ AND RANA

Mohammed Siraj took two wickets of his own, beginning with Mitchell Marsh in the 17th over, who was sent off on a delivery that flew off the edge of his bat, forcing KL Rahul to take an incredible catch at third slip. Not long after in the 21st over, Marnus Labuschagne was sent off on a delivery from Siraj that struck him on the pad. Labuschagne used a review but it just confirmed that leg stump was a goner. The Australian batter only managed to score two runs off the 52 delivereies he faced.

Harshit Rana got his maiden test wicket after dismissing Travis Head in the 12th over. The incredible delivery from the debutant froze Head as the ball flew past the outside edge before crashing into the top of off stump.
