ADELAIDE: India won the toss on Thursday and chose to bat first against Australia in the second test of a five match series. Australia are looking to level the series after Bumrah led India to an incredible comeback in their first contest.
INDIA’S INNINGS
India ran into trouble immediately, on the very first ball of the match. Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed for a golden duck on a delivery from Mitchell Starc. The ball landed plumb on Jaiswal’s front pad as the delivery swung back into the Indian opener. The umpires finger went up and Australia had the start they dreamed of.
India’s other opener, KL Rahul would last longer, scoring 37 runs on the 64 balls he faced, hitting six fours along the way. However, he too would fall in the 19th over to Starc’s as a short of length delivery from the Aussie bounced off the face of Rahul’s bat to gully. The ball was low, forcing Nathan McSweeney to take a diving catch.

Starc wasn’t done tormenting India yet. Virat Kohli superseded him and was dismissed after just two overs on the pitch. Kohli, who seemed to be out of his rut following the century he scored in the second innings in the first test against Australia, fell back into his slump. The delivery from Starc was met with hesitation from Kohli, resulting in the ball ricocheting off his bat and to second slip, where Steven Smith took the catch.
In the very next over, Scott Boland would take his first wicket, dismissing Shubman Gill who had made 31 runs before he was sent off. Gill attempted to flick the ball towards leg side but missed the attempt, allowing the ball to hit him on the shin in front of off stump. After a talk with his partner, Gill walked off. Boland would take another wicket soon after, dismissing Indian skipper Rohit Sharma in the 26th over. It was the third lbw of the day, as the delivery from Boland avoided the inside edge of Rohit’s bat before hitting the knee roll. The Indian captain only managed to make three runs before he was sent off.
Australian skipper Pat Cummins would then get his first wicket, dismissing Rishabh Pant as the delivery popped up off of the shoulder of his bat to gully where Marcus Labuschagne took the catch.

Starc then jumped back into the fray, taking two more wickets, dismissing both Ravichandran Ashwin and Harshit Rana in the 38th over. Ashwin was sent off first, as the delivery struck him on the pads. He reviewed but it was no use. Three reds and he was off. Rana came in to replace, and was sent off for a duck on the third ball he faced, thanks to an inswinging yorker from Starc that brought up his five-fer.
Cummins would take the penultimate wicket of the first innings, sending off Jasprit Bumrah for the third duck of the game. Cummins delivery found the outside edge of Bumrah’s bat, sending the ball to first slip, where Usman Khawaja made the catch.
Nitish Kumar Reddy was the final man to fall for India, giving Starc his sixth wicket of the day. Reddy fell eight runs short of a half century, as he swung big but only got the toe end of his bat on the delivery from Starc, hitting it towards mid-off, where Travis Head had settled to take an easy catch.
