Recap: India crumble against Cummins and Boland’s bowling

India

MELBOURNE: After ending Australia’s first innings on Friday morning, India would begin their first, and it wouldn’t take long for them to crumble.

India skipper Rohit Sharma would fall in the second over of the game, after only scoring three runs off five deliveries. Pat Cummins’ delivery popped up high after taking a leading edge off Sharma’s bat. Scott Boland would take an easy catch at mid-on.

Cummins would take the second wicket of the game as well in the 15th over, bowling KL Rahul on a delivery that collided with the top of off stump. Yashasvi Jaiswal was the next to fall. But before he was sent off in the 41st over, Jaiswal put on the best batting performance in India’s line-up so far, scoring 82 runs off 118 deliveries, hitting 11 fours and one six in the process.

A mix-up between Jaiswal and Virat Kohli brought an awkward end to their partnership that was just shy of reaching 100. Jaiswal would direct the delivery from Boland to mid-off and would beginning running for a single. However, Kohli wasn’t interested, and before long, both Indian batters found themselves at the same end.

After an end to the most promising knock yet, things would get worse for India, as Boland would take a wicket in each of his next two overs. In the 43rd, he would send off Kohli, who up to that point had been doing well. Boland’s delivery would clip the edge of Kohli’s bat, and wicket-keeper Alex Carey would do the rest.

In the 45th over of the innings, and second last of the day, Boland would dismiss Akash Deep for a duck. Nathan Lyon would take a diving catch after Boland’s delivery found the inside edge of Akash’s bat, as the Indian batter failed to fend off the short delivery from the Aussie.

After 46 overs, India stand at 164 for 5.
