LAHORE: Pakistan tightened their grip on the first Test against South Africa as the visitors were bowled out for 269 in their first innings at the Gaddafi Stadium. Spinner Noman Ali was the star of the show, claiming six wickets, while Sajid Khan provided strong support with three scalps.
For South Africa, Tony de Zorzi stood out with a resilient century, scoring 104 runs to keep his side afloat amid a flurry of dismissals. However, his effort wasn’t enough to close the gap on Pakistan’s commanding first-innings total of 378. With a lead of 109 runs, Pakistan are firmly in control heading into the next phase of the match, putting the visitors under pressure to mount a strong response in their second innings.
South Africa began the day at 216-6, with Tony de Zorzi unbeaten on 81 and Muthusamy on 6, hoping to chip away at Pakistan’s first-innings lead. However, their partnership was short-lived as Sajid, bowling with precision and drift, broke through early in the morning session. Muthusamy’s cautious stay ended when he edged a turning delivery, caught comfortably in the slips.
Rickelton falls for 71 as South Africa lose third wicket in Lahore Test
Earlier, the Proteas had struggled against Pakistan’s spin attack, with Noman Ali wreaking havoc to claim four wickets in the first innings. Salman Ali Agha and Sajid Khan provided steady support with a wicket each, while South Africa’s top order faltered despite a fighting 71 from Ryan Rickelton.
At the time of Muthusamy’s dismissal, South Africa still trailed by over 150 runs, with only the tailenders remaining to offer resistance. The breakthrough further strengthened Pakistan’s position as they looked to wrap up the innings swiftly and push for a commanding lead in the two-match series opener.
The Gaddafi Stadium crowd, witnessing the home side’s dominance under clear skies and tight security, erupted in applause as Sajid’s delivery spun the momentum firmly back in Pakistan’s favour.
