Sean Williams penalised for dissent during ODI against Pakistan

Sean Williams was given an official warning for breaching the ICC Cord of Conduct during the second ODI against Pakistan.

BULAWAYO: Zimbabwean cricketer Sean Williams was given an official warning for breaching the International Cricket Council (ICC) Cord of Conduct during the second one-day international (ODI) against Pakistan.

The 38-year-old Zimbabwean was found guilty of disputing an umpire’s decision, a matter that drew attention in the cricketing community.

In the second ODI match of the series, Pakistan made a surprise comeback, winning by ten wickets and leveling the series 1-1.

Earlier, Zimbabwe had secured a narrow victory in the first ODI, winning by eight runs via the DLS method.

During the second ODI, Williams scored 37 runs off 39 balls before being outed by Saim Ayub.

His visible annoyance with the umpire’s decision led to a breach of article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which prohibits players from contesting umpire decisions during international play.

The ICC confirmed that the Zimbabwean all-rounder received one demerit point for the incident. This marks his first infraction in a 2-year span.

The charge was brought by on-field umpires, Michael Gough and Forster Mutizwa, along with the third umpire, Iknow Chabi and fourth umpire, Langton Rusere.

Season Williams accepted the charge and the suggested penalty, eliminating the need for a formal hearing.

Under the ICC Cord of Conduct, level 1 violations carry a minimum penalty of an official ‘reprimand’ and can result in a maximum fine of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, along with one or two demerit point.

The framework is designed to maintain discipline and respect for officials in the sport.

Despite his considerable experience, having played 158 ODIs, Williams has found it challenging to convert promising starts into substantial scores in the series against Pakistan.

In the first ODI, he only managed to score 23 runs before being dismissed. As the series progresses, his fans will be eager to see if Sean Williams can rebound and deliver a better performance for his home team.
