Shakib would be leading the team during the Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup.
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hasan confirmed this to the media Friday afternoon.
“Shakib is the captain for the Asia Cup, New Zealand series and World Cup,” said Nazmul.
“He is the obvious choice. Who else can lead? But we had to talk to him before appointing him. Nobody should think anything else. Shakib is the captain. He was always the main choice.”
36-year old Shakib has captained Bangladesh in 50 ODI matches between 2009 and 2017, winning 23.
His overall record of 23 victories makes him the third most successful ODI captain behind Mashrafe Mortaza (50) and Habibul Bashar (29).
He has also led Bangladesh in 19 Tests and 39 T20Is, besides discharging leadership duties in all three formats from 2009 to 2011.
