Sinner beats Giron with ease, inches closer to AO quarter-finals

Sinner

MELBOURNE: Jannik Sinner overcame Marcos Giron in the third round of the Australian Open with relative ease, winning in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, and 6-2.

After winning his own service game quickly, Sinner immediately got the first break of the match on his second break point of the second game. The Italian had the opportunity to get another break in the sixth game of the match, but Giron held strong, denying the break, forcing a deuce, and winning his service game.

The two won their respective service games until Sinner won the set 6-3. However, Giron tried his best to stop him, getting a break point in the ninth game. But, Sinner eventually won the game on his second set point.

Giron held on a bit longer in the second set before conceding a break. This time it was on his third service game that Sinner pulled away. The American almost got a break right back, however the Italian held strong, forcing a deuce and subsequently winning his service game. The two continued to win their respective games, until Sinner won the set 6-4.

The final set was the most action packed out of the three. The world number one immediately got a break on the very first game, but Giron tried his best to stop the world number one. After Giron stopped the first two break points to force a deuce, Sinner took the advantage and the game soon after.

The ATP ranked 46th player was on the verge of his first break in the next game, winning three straight points to earn three break points. However, Sinner outdid him, winning five straight points to deny a shift in momentum. The Fox then found himself with another break point in the next game, but Giron held strong winning his own service before finally taking a game away from Sinner.

The American earned two break points after taking a 40-15 lead, and capitalised on the second. Unfortunately for him, Sinner returned the favour right away. The Italian won the next game after that and then got his fifth and final break of the match. He ended the match in the next game.

Sinner will now face the winner of the contest between Miomir Kecmanovic and Holger Rune. That match will take place on January 20, and if the world number one wins, he will find himself with a spot in the quarterfinals.
