Sinner still looking to improve after winning ATP Finals

Sinner

TURIN: Jannik Sinner said there is still room for him to improve on Monday after defeating Taylor Fritz in straight sets in the Nitto ATP Finals, marking the first time he has won the end of year event.

“There are still certain shots and points what I can make sometimes better, but are small details. The higher you play level-wise, the more details make the difference,” Sinner said.

Sinner found his first break in the seventh game of the first set with a beautifully placed drop-shot right at the net that Fritz chased to no avail. The Italian would end the set in the tenth game on his service. Fritz would force a deuce and subsequently take the advantage. However, a powerful serve would force Fritz to net his backhand, before Sinner closed the set with a thundering ace.

Sinner’s second break came much earlier in the second set, on Fritz third service game. The world number one would take advantage after placing a backhand a little beyond Fritz reach, resulting in the American not getting enough on his return to clear the net. Sinner would win his second break point after Fritz launched a forehand just beyond the baseline, taking a 3-2 game lead.

The Italian would end the match in the tenth game of the second set in five points. A rocket serve would force Fritz on the back-foot immediately, allowing Sinner to send a forehand towards the opposite side-line with no hope for the American to return. Sinner would then offer another incredible drop-shot to take control of the game. A vicious forehand from the Italian, followed by a shot wide of the side-line from the American, would seal the game, and the match.

Sinner won the Nitto ATP Finals 2024 for the first time in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-4.

“Starting next year, I feel like I have a good idea of what things I need to improve on, but I also feel like I’m playing very good tennis,” said Sinner following his fantastic performance.
