MIRPUR: South Africa put up a lead of 202 runs behind a century from Kyle Verreynne before getting all out on Tuesday, the second day of the first test against Bangladesh.
An incredible bowling performance from the Proteas limited Bangladesh to only 106 in their first innings, behind stellar performances from Kagiso Rabada, Wiaan Mulder, Keshav Maharaj, and Dane Piedt. Rabada broke the record for the fastest player to reach 300 wickets in tests.
Then, wicket-keeper Kyle Verreynne scored his second ever century in tests, and his second highest score ever in the format, making 114 runs. Taijul Islam would be Bangladesh’s stand out bowler, taking five wickets.
SOUTH AFRICA’S 1ST INNINGS
Bangladesh put on the pressure immediately, as Hasan Mahmud dismissed South African skipper Aiden Markram on the last ball of the first over. Markram was beaten on the outside before the ball took out the middle stump. It was the beginning of Mahmud’s assault, which saw him take two more wickets.
The next two would come much later, but would send off Wiaan Mulder and Keshav Maharaj on back to back balls. In the 65th over, Mahmud would find the thick outside edge edge of Mulder’s bat, before Shadman Islam at wide slip took the catch. On the very next ball, Maharaj would try to defend, but would be helpless as the ball went past the inside edge, slamming into the off stump.
Kagiso Radbada breaks record as South Africa overwhelm Bangladesh
Despite a great bowling performance for Mahmud, Taijul Islam was the true star of Bangladesh’s bowlers, taking five wickets in South Africa’s first innings. And it would be five wickets in a row. Tristan Stubss would be caught out in the 12th over as Taijul’s delivery would find the edge of the bat before heading to Shadman at slip. David Bedingham would be sent off in the 20th over, as Islam found another edge and wicketkeeper Litoon Das took the catch.
Tony de Zorzi would be sent off in the 28th. The ball found yet another bat’s edge, and Mahmudal Hasan was ready to make the dive in order to take the low catch. Matthew Breetzke would be out for a duck, as Taijul got the 200th wicket of his test career. Predicting that the delivery would turn away from him, as the last ball he faced did, he stayed his bat. To his dismay, the delivery would take out the off stump.
Islam’s final wicket would come in the 32nd over, taking out Ryan Rickelton as the delivery got an edge before getting to the keeper.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz would get two wickets of his own to end South Africa’s innings. He would send off Dane Piedt in the 87th. Despite the review from the South African, UltraEdge showed that there was no bat involved, while ball tracking found that the leg stump would be clipped.

Kyle Verreynne would be the last to fall for South Africa, but not before he made a century, scoring 114 runs off 144 balls, hitting eight fours and two sixes in the process. Right after hitting his second six, a confident Verreynne looked to sweep a slower delivery from Miraz. Unfortunately for South Africa, he was beaten by the delivery, and Litton Das stumped Verreynne who was well outside the crease.
South Africa lead by 202 after scoring 308 runs in 89 overs.
