MIRPUR: South Africa beat Bangladesh in the first test of the series by seven wickets on Thursday, as the Proteas’ batters took advantage of the stage set by Kagiso Rabada’s excellent bowling.
South Africa skipper Aiden Markram was the first to be dismissed, scoring 20 runs off 27 deliveries, hitting four fours in the process before being bowled by Islam in the tenth over. Markram looked to defend on the front foot, but a lack of spin on the ball allowed the delivery to get past the captain’s inside edge and to the stumps.
Tony de Zorzi made the majority of the required runs, scoring 41, just short of a half century. He did so in 52 deliveries, hitting seven fours in the process. He was eventually dismissed by Taijul Islam in the 16th over. Zorzi came down the pitch, looking for a big shot, which ended up gong to Hasan Mahmud, who took the catch.
Bangladesh all out at 307, Rabada takes six
David Bedingham would only score 12 runs off 13 deliveries before being sent off shortly before South Africa would complete their chase. Wicket keeper Litton Das would take the catch after the ball turned away from Bedingham who was trying to defend. The delivery caught the outside edge of the South African players bat before landing in the gloves of Das.
However, it was no issue for the Proteas, who easily made the score, as Tristan Stubbs would reach the target in the next two overs. He scored a total of 30 runs off 37 deliveries, hitting four fours and one six in the process of winning the match.
