GALLE: Sri Lanka only trailed by 30 runs before they broke for lunch on day 4 of the first test against Bangladesh, thanks to a great knock by Kamindu Mendis, who made use of the momentum Pathum Nissanka created.
After Nissanka scored an incredible knock of 187 off 256, it was Kamindu who took the reigns and is now leading the charge as he sits at 83 off 139 after 124 overs. He brought up his 50 early in the 105th over, providing Sri Lanka with a little boost after they lost two wickets in the first few overs.
In just the third over of the day and the 96th of the innings, skipper Dhananjaya de Silva was caught behind on a delivery from Nayeem Hasan after scoring 19 runs off 36. Not long adfter in the 101st over, Kusal Mendis’ innings was cut short, as he was also caught behind, this time on a delivery from Hasan Mahmud.

As Kamindu inches closer to the sixth test century of his young international career, he is joined on the field by Milan Rathnayake, who is closing in on a half century of his own. Rathnayake currently sits at 38 off 76. The 28-year-old had a slight scare in the 110th over, as a delivery from Taijul Islam popped up of Rathanayake’s bat, but the Bangladesh bowler wasn’t able to complete the catch.
While still a closely contested contest, it seems that Sri Lanka are slowly but surely taking charge. However, as day 4 heads into its second session with either team yet to begin their second innings, a draw is becoming the most probable outcome.
Sri Lanka stand at 465 for six after 30 runs at lunch on day 4.
