ARLINGTON: Amanda Serrano fell short once again against Katie Taylor on Friday night, as the two faced off for a second time in a bout where the future Hall of Famers fought tooth and nail for the undisputed super lightweight title.
Taylor managed to win all four belts at super lightweight after defeating Chantelle Cameron in her second attempt against the former undisputed super lightweight champion at the end of 2023. Taylor managed to defeat Serrano in their first outing in 2022, when the two competed for the undisputed lightweight championship.
The epic bout began with Serrano gaining the upper hand early on, as she hurt the undisputed champion with a left hand that landed clean on Taylors chin, hurting her right at the bell. Taylor returned fire in the second, gifting Serrano a few beautiful flurries of shots. However, Serrano continued to put the pressure on in the third, a trend that continued into the fourth as she landed the cleaner shots. The two exchanged viscous combinations as Serrano forced Taylor towards the ropes, with the undisputed super lightweight champion trying everything in her power to keep Serrano at bay. A cut opened up above Serrano’s right eye, as a stumbling Taylor headbutted her opponent.

Round five saw Taylor attempt to maintain the distance, but Serrano managed to maker her way into range, landing a couple of powerful left hands. Taylor continued her strategy of clinching whenever Serrano got in too close, attempting to reset the momentum of the bout. The fight would become more controversial in the sixth, as Serrano’s cut, which Taylor dealt earlier with a clash of heads, opened up and became much worse, leading to the referee bringing in the doctor to check whether Serrano would be able to continue.
The bout would continue but the blood would continue to gush, blinding Serrano in the seventh and allowing Taylor to find more success in their exchanges. The two women duked it out in the second of the ring, but Taylor managed to get the better of Serrano a couple of times in their exchanges. Another clash of heads in round 8 would open Serrano’s cut yet again, resulting in a point being deducted from Taylor. The final round featured the two women stand their ground and lay into each other. With a minute remaining in the bout, Serrano would try to get the 32nd knockout of her career, landing a vicious flurry on Taylor who was hoping to initiate a clinch. Taylor would continue to try and clinch as Serrano pushed her off, landing blow after blow. The contest would end with an exhausted Taylor pushing a bloodied Serrano into the ropes, as the final bell of the bout rang.
After 10 rounds, all three judges scored the contest 95-94, declaring Katie Taylor winner by unanimous decision. Commentators and crowd alike were stunned, with many believing that Serrano had done enough to win the fight. CompuBox statistics seemed to support their belief, as Serrano, who had the advantage in power between the two fighters, landed over a hundred more shots than her opponent.
