The League Two side took control early, scoring twice in the first half. Charles Vernam opened the scoring with a flourish. Tyrell Warren extended the lead thanks to an error from Manchester United’s goalkeeper André Onana.

Grimsby’s aggressive play kept the Premier League side under pressure throughout the first 45 minutes. United struggled to respond effectively.

Manchester United fought back in the second half. Bryan Mbeumo scored in the 75th minute. Team captain Harry Maguire equalised late to push the game into a penalty shootout.

Despite the goals, United failed to dominate and relied on late contributions to level the score.

The shootout lasted for 26 kicks, with both sides converting each attempt until Bryan Mbeumo’s second penalty hit the crossbar. Grimsby goalkeeper Christy Pym saved Matheus Cunha’s penalty which proved crucial in securing the victory.

The home crowd celebrated wildly while United faced a humbling exit from the competition.

The defeat put Manchester United’s manager Ruben Amorim into the spotlight. Despite significant summer spending, the team showed a lack of cohesion and intensity. Amorim acknowledged a poor start to the match and apologised to supporters.
