Apple to launch AirTag 2 with longer range and stronger privacy

AirTag 2 features

WEB DESK: Apple is set to release a new version of its AirTag tracking device later this year. Called AirTag 2, the updated model will offer better tracking range, improved wireless tech, and stronger privacy features.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, AirTag 2 will use the ultra-wideband chip first seen in the iPhone 15. This new chip could triple the tracking range. The current AirTag supports precision finding up to 30 metres. AirTag 2 may extend that range to about 90 metres.

The update also comes as Apple faces criticism over AirTag misuse. Since its launch in 2021, stalkers have used the device to track people without their knowledge. In some cases, users disabled the speaker so the AirTag could not alert nearby devices.

Apple is expected to address these privacy issues in the new version, though exact details are unclear.

AirTag 2 was first expected in May or June, but the launch now appears set for September. It will likely be unveiled alongside the iPhone 17 series.

Apple has already released several new devices this year, including the iPhone 16e, M4 MacBook Air, M3 iPad Air, and A16 iPad.

Until AirTag 2 arrives, the current model is available at a discount. A pack of four currently costs $64.99, down from the usual $116.
