Google updates Android Auto compatibility requirements after two years

android auto requirements

WEB DESK: Google has recently revised the requirements for using Android Auto, mandating that users must now have smartphones running Android 9.0 (Pie) or higher. This marks a significant update from the previous requirement of Android 8.0 (Oreo), which was in place since July 2022.

Historically, Android Auto’s requirements were relatively modest. Up until two years ago, any device running Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) or newer was compatible.

However, with the latest change, users will need to have an Android device operating on version 9.0 or above.

As of July 2024, Google’s updated support page for Android Auto reflects this change. The update also indicates that the “latest Android Auto app” is no longer a necessity, as the app is now integrated into the system on all devices with Android 9.0 and above.

It’s worth noting that the official Android Auto website has yet to reflect this change, still listing Android 8.0 as the minimum requirement, suggesting this update is quite recent.

Updated requirements (July 2024):

– An Android phone running Android 9.0 (Pie) or higher with an active data plan.

– A compatible car or stereo system that supports Android Auto.

– A high-quality USB cable.

This adjustment is unlikely to significantly affect users, as Android 8.0 (Oreo) is only present on just over 6 per cent of active devices as of July 2024, down from around 8 per cent in 2023.

The update follows indications from December 2023 that Google was planning to phase out support for older Android versions. At that time, specifics about the timing and the new version requirements were not disclosed.

It’s important to note that these updated requirements apply to wired connections only. For users wishing to utilise Android Auto wirelessly, additional specifications may apply.
