Apple plans to launch new ‘Passwords’ app for iPhone and Mac

Apple Passwords app

WEB DESK: Apple is set to introduce a new Passwords app in its upcoming iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15, according to a report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

This new application aims to provide a streamlined and user-friendly alternative to popular third-party password managers like 1Password and LastPass, enabling users to access their stored login information more easily across iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices.

Currently, Apple offers a Passwords feature integrated within the Settings app, but its somewhat obscure placement can be challenging for users to locate. Over time, Apple has enhanced this feature by adding functionalities such as login storage, support for one-time login codes, and password generation capabilities directly within Safari.

The forthcoming dedicated Passwords app will be built on the existing iCloud Keychain framework, which synchronizes login credentials and password details across all Apple devices.

This new app will incorporate all the features available in the current Settings-based Passwords section, extending its usability to the Vision Pro and Windows PCs as well.

The app will manage logins and passwords for websites, Wi-Fi networks, and the innovative Passkeys feature, which uses Face ID or Touch ID for password-free website logins. The Passwords app will also facilitate the automatic insertion of login credentials into websites and apps, enhancing user convenience.

Apple’s objective with the Passwords app is to promote the use of stronger, unique passwords and to discourage the repetition of passwords across multiple sites and services.

By entering the market traditionally dominated by third-party services, Apple plans to allow users to import their existing passwords from other services, making the transition seamless.

Apple is expected to unveil the new Passwords app during its WWDC keynote event next Monday, highlighting its commitment to enhancing security and user experience.
