WEB DESK: Samsung has reignited interest in its upcoming XR headset, initially teased early last year. After months of silence, the company once again hinted at the device last week, signalling a potential launch early next year.

A recent report by Business Insider reveals that Samsung’s first XR headset is internally codenamed ‘Moohan’. The report suggests that a developer version of Moohan will be available by October 2024, with a consumer launch likely in March 2025.

However, details on the announcement strategy remain sparse. It is unclear if the device will be officially unveiled in October this year or if it will be shown exclusively to developers.

Speculation suggests that Samsung might ship the developer version in October, tease the design and some features by the end of the year, and fully showcase the device during the Galaxy S25 announcement in January or February 2025.

The headset could then hit the market in March 2025, shortly after its official reveal.

Samsung’s development journey for the XR headset faced significant hurdles. The original model was reportedly shelved after Samsung realised the advanced capabilities of Apple’s Vision Pro. This setback pushed Samsung back to the drawing board, aiming to create a device that could captivate users.

The Moohan headset is expected to feature two 1.03-inch square OLEDoS screens with a resolution of 2,500 x 2,500 pixels, a pixel density of 3,500ppi, and a 90Hz refresh rate. It will likely be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 processor and may include up to 12 cameras.

Additionally, Samsung is poised to be the first to launch AR glasses running on Google’s AR-focused operating system. Google’s decision to lay off its entire AR hardware development team in January suggests that the tech giant has no immediate plans to launch its own AR headset. This move reassures hardware partners like Samsung, who now face less competition in the AR market.

With these developments, Samsung is positioning itself to make a significant impact in the XR and AR space, leveraging its partnership with Google and its own technological advancements.
